VERSILIA, TUSCANY: ANCIENT & CONTEMPORARY ART
Posted by Violetta Buti in CITY-BREAKS on 10/11/2010
Pietrasanta, nested in the hills of the Tuscan region of Versilia, is the ideal town for a 2-3 day stay if you are looking for a
sophisticated experience in Italy. Art enthusiasts have come here for years to walk in the footsteps of Michelangelo. Pietrasanta is at the foot of the famous Carrara marble quarries. Many sculptors from around the world will eventually visit this town and maybe spend part of the year here.
We have chosen for you a 4-star hotel housed in an ancient Palazzo with well preserved fresco ceilings. Here, a collection of contemporary art is on permanent display.
The town boasts an ancient cathedral, medieval buildings, a fortress built along the hill, and very contemporary “Last Judgment” frescoes painted by the Columbian artist Fernando Botero. Open-air exhibits attract many visitors from May throughout the summer.
The main square is the ideal place for an aperitif (happy hour), while the tiny roads are perfect for a stroll to enjoy looking in the many shop windows. Many well-known restaurants will be happy to host you as their guests.
Not far from Pietrasanta are famous art cities such as Pisa, Lucca and Florence. Forte dei Marmi is famous for designer shops and only a 15 minutes car drive, while the beach is 3 kms (1 and ½ miles) away.

TUSCANY & CONTEMPORARY ART
Posted by Violetta Buti in 2010 Summer Events in Florence, Contemporary sculptors, EXHIBITS IN ITALY on 28/07/2010
Tuscany attracts people from around the world not only for its superb ancient art and special atmosphere: CONTEMPORARY ART has become part of a true Italian experience that every visitor to this area should experience. Around Volterra are contemporary art installations that make the experience of driving up to Volterra one not to be missed. Spectacular views and nature will surprise you at every curve of this winding road – the old Etruscan road still connecting Volterra with Fiesole (near Florence). The Etruscans lived in this area from the 8th century B.C. when the Romans had not founded Florence yet. They were contemporaries of the Greeks and possessed an elevated cultural level. In Volterra you can visit the Etruscan museum and, as you walk around the town, see an Etruscan gate dating back to the 2nd century B.C. Internationally known artist Mauro Staccioli was borne in this city. His works blend perfectly with the Tuscany countryside. The exhibit will be visible until September 2010.
BANKING & ART IN FLORENCE, ITALY, IN THE 3rd MILLENNIUM
Posted by Violetta Buti in CITY TOURS OF FLORENCE, Contemporary architecture, Contemporary sculptors, EXHIBITS IN ITALY on 10/11/2009
On the last 3rd of October of 2009 the Florentines were offered a free guided tour of the new Italian Bank “Cassa di Risparmio” situated in an area of Florence called “Novoli” where many new buildings such as the new Court and University of Florence are being build.
As always with the Italians art and design are an important mark of this new building. At the back
we find a formal garden created with the typical mediterranean flora that one can usually find along the coast of Italy. As an additional Tuscan touch we can admire ligned up terracotta vases with lemon trees that cannot be missed in the usual Toscana garden or park.
IGOR MITORAJ is a living contemporary Polnish artist whose works can be seen inside the Boboli Gardens behind the Pitti Palace in Florence, in Greve in Chianti, in Pietrasanta near the Tuscan coast where he opened his atelier years ago and now in the garden and inside the building of the new “Cassa di Risparmio” in Florence.
BAROCCI, ITALIAN PAINTER – EXHIBIT IN SIENA, ITALY
Posted by Violetta Buti in CULTURAL EVENTS IN FLORENCE, EXHIBITS IN ITALY, Italian painters on 17/10/2009
Last 9th of October I attended the press conference for the opening of the exhibit dedicated to a great yet little known painter: Federico Barocci (1528-1612). Born in Urbino (Duchy of Urbino in the past) he worked both in Urbino and Rome. A great work of his (“la Madonna del Popolo”)can be seen in the Uffizi museum in the city of Florence; among the many things, this city is famous in the word for a period that was defined as Renaissance.
GIOTTO, EXHIBIT IN ROME & RE-OPENING OF HIS BIRTH HOUSE IN VICCHIO, TUSCANY
Posted by Violetta Buti in Giotto, painter and architect of the fourtienth century in Italy on 20/04/2009
Giotto represented a huge change in the XIVth century art. The first who used the ”chiaro-scuro” technique in painting and gave a modern look to the saints, madonnas, etc. that he painted in the cities of Assisi (Church of San Francesco), Padua (Cappella degli Scrovegni), Florence (Churches of Holy Cross and Santa Maria Novella).
We bring to your attention the EXHIBITION ABOUT GIOTTO taking place in Rome at the Vittoriano building until June 29th, 2009. The exhibit is a thorough desplay of paintings about this artist coming from the major museums in Italy and in the world. Opening times: Monday to Thursday 9:30 AM to 7:30 PM – Fiday / Saturday from :30 AM to 11:30 PM – Sunday from 9:30 AM to 8:30 PM. In the museum you will be able to watch an extraordinary documentary film about Giotto, from his childhood in the Mugello to the major works he painted in Assisi, Padua and Florence. This film is already worth a visit! It is shown alternatively in Italian and English language and lasts 20 minutes. In the nearby room are three computers that enable the visitor to search about Giotto and his works. Another section of the museum is dedicated to the connection between Giotto and the territory, nature and landscape where he was born and that still surround his house-museum today. Thanks to the projection of a video we are introduced to this wonderful world and may better understand the connection between the painter and the subjects that he painted. At last, on the second floor of the house, an artist’s work-shop has been created so that children and teen-agers can directly use different coulors and paintings techiniques .
