As an example Giovanni Tornabuoni had the painter Domenico del Ghirlandaio paint in their altar chapel in the church Santa Maria Novella two cycles of paintings: One is dadicated to the life story of St. John the Baptist (patron saint of Florence and name of Tornabuoni) and the other one to the Holy Vergin Mary. In the scenes you can see people of the time and members of the Tornabuoni family (of course, they were paying and they wanted to be painted surrounded by holy people!).
