FLORENCE 2010-MOVING DAVID AROUND…

DAVID on November 13, 2010

Alternative locations for satue of DAVID by Michelangelo

GREAT EVENT IN FLORENCE today, November 13th, 2010! The Duomo, the Baptistery and Bell Tower had been surrounded by green grass. The white and green marble of the buildings and the green grass created a great effect. The statue of David was standing on one side of the cathedral, yesterday, and , on the yard of the Duomo, today. Tomorrow it will be moved to the Piazza della Signoria, in front of the city hall Palazzo Vecchio, that is where the people of Florence decided to put it in 1504.

San Zanobi column in Florence

David as bishop San Zanobi

November 13, 2010 – Florentines and visitors to the city were surprised with a green grass flowerbed today – Just like when the remains of bishop Saint Zanobi were moved from the old cathedral San Lorenzo to the new one,Santa Reparata, many centuries ago.

Looking carefully, you can spot the statue of David (a fiberglass versione prepared for this event!) on the Duomo’s yard, next to the entrance. This one was the locations chosen to put David back in 1504. Then, it was decided that the front of the city hall Palazzo della Signoria was a better place.

DAVID’S STATUE: WHERE IT WAS MEANT TO BE!

November 12th, 2010 - FLORENCE

MOST FAMOUS STATUE BY MICHELANGELO

It weighs 400 kgs and has a height of 5,70 meters (the original is 4,10 meters high). A copy in fiberglass is being moved to 3 different locations in Florence. Here it’s being lifted to go on top of the Duomo of Florence as some “experts” suggested just after the statue was finished by Michelangelo in 1504, after 2 and a 1/2 years of hard work (this artist did everything alone, never had apprentices or helpers).

David is being moved frome one spot to the other, in Florence. When? In mid November 2010.

If you have missed the event, you will always be able to see the original statue (Carrara marble) in the Academy museum (closed on Mondays) where it is on permanent display – or the copy in front of the city hall Palazzo Vecchio or another copy on top of Michelangelo square, the most famous hill in Florence, from where one can also enjoy the most beautiful view of the city.

Please click on the following pictures to enlarge them. I took them from Michelangelo Square this morning December 19th, 2009. This panoramic hill can be considered a natural terrace overlooking the city of Florence: best view guaranteed!  The statue of David (it’s a copy, a famous copy anyway, the original is in the Academy museum) was covered with snow … so were the trees, the roofs, the dome, everything. It was hard to walk because of the snow around and many people– both locals and tourists – were here taking pictures of this amazing rare event. It probably snows once every five years in Florence.
