PRIVATE WALKING TOURS BY ENGLISH-SPEAKING PROFESSIONAL GUIDES
One of the most beloved cities in Italy, Siena has a large pedestrian area and is full of picturesque medieval streets. Extraordinary example of medieval city in Tuscany, Siena stretches on three hills. It became important in the middle Ages because of its strategic position on the via Francigena, the major route pilgrims walked from the north of Europe to reach Rome, center of Christianity.
TOUR DURATION: 2-3 HOURS
Together with your guide you will be walking along the main streets of Siena: here you will perceive the atmosphere of the Middle Ages and see the elegant palaces where the wealthiest families used to live. There is the Palazzo Salimbeni, seat of the oldest bank of Italy (and of the world!) “Monte dei Paschi di Siena” and Palazzo Tolomei, seat of the “Cassa di Risparmio”.
You will walk the route of the pilgrims to reach the Cathedral dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary to Heaven and marvel at the enormous quantity of marble used to decorate the exterior and the interior of the Duomo. The floor is decorated with marble inlay in mosaics and graffiti to create a complete program to be "read" by all the visitors. Dozens of different artists worked at it for at least 170 years.
There will be the opportunity to climb the wall which was part of the extension of the Duomo to create the largest cathedral in the world, larger than the one in Florence. Unfortunately, it was not possible to complete the project because of the terrible plague in 1348 which killed two thirds of the people of Siena.
To complete the visit, your guide will take you to piazza del Campo where the Palio, famous horse race, takes place every year on the 2nd of July and the 16th of August. Your guide will certainly have a lot to tell you about the involvement and feelings of the Sienesi people who prepare for this event during the whole year! Piazza del Campo, a shell shaped square, is one of the most beautiful and unique squares in Italy and in the world.
